16th March - Creation of Cover and Double Spread

This week I have begun my music magazine. I thought of various names for my magazine, taking inspiration from the great rock musicians or names associated with music. The names I thougtht of were: Jagger   Mercury   Hendrix   Rhapsody   Kickstart   Amp It Up

I have decided to call my magazine 'Rhapsody' because of its relation to music and it's use in the Queen hit 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. The dictionary definition for this term is 'an effusively enthusiastic or ecstatic expression of feeling', this made the term seem perfect for the title of my magazine.

Before creating my own masthead/logo I looked at others that were already in use, here are some I looked at:

I noticed that these magazines used either red, white and black as the main colours or just the monochrome black and white. This was something to consider when thinking of my colour scheme. Most of the mastheads used all capitals so I thought I might try that too.

I trialed different fonts for the masthead, using the website 1001freefonts.com. Here are a few images of the fonts I had to chose from:

Pan Am Font
Mister Belvedere Font (Upper Case)
Mister Belvedere Font (Lower Case)
World of Water Font

I decided on the Mister Belvedere font (upper case) as it was bold and looked as though it fit with the ideas of my magazine - it seemed as though it belonged on the front cover of a rock magazine.

Next I had to choose a colour scheme. After my research I had knew that reds and blacks were used frequently, so I wanted to replicate this in my magazine. Initially I chose red, black and white for my colour scheme, featured below:
After choosing these colours I didn't like how harsh they were on the page, so I decided to make the red dark darker, possibly connoting the magazines representation of the readers passion for rock. I also lightened the black to a deep grey and darkened the white to a light grey. Here is my new colour scheme:
Here is the final design of my mast head:
Then I had to begin the layout of my front cover, which I have almost completed. I will take this in to school and ask people's opinions and see if they have any advice for me to improve it.

I began the double page spread, using the colour scheme I had just used for the cover page. I realise that most magazines don't use the exact same colours for their double page spread as they do on the cover, however I wanted to create a 'corporate identity' for my magazine. Due to the little amount of pages we had to produce I decided it would be best to keep to the same colours as the cover.

I followed my designs closely and didn't encounter many problems with it.
